Happy Halloween!

October 31, 2008

Jonathan & Sean
Here are the kids on Halloween. Sean is NOT dressed up after screaming for 10 seconds while I attempted to put on his Tigger costume (it was a hand-me-down so I wasn’t too concerned).
Jonathan wanted to be a robot so Shane got a box from work, and yesterday I cut it down to size, taped it up (yes I used duct tape!), and sprayed it silver. Today we added the “buttons and stuff”.

At school they got to parade around to each of the different classrooms, and show off their costumes. He had a lot of fun with it!

These pictures are a bit overdue, but since they don’t have a computer that can upload them, I got Kirston’s pictures from her camera and made a slideshow. You can see it here.  Enjoy!

Apple juice

October 25, 2008

For the last 15+ years we have made fresh apple juice at my Grandpa Smith’s house. He only has 2 trees, but they sure make a lot of apples! Since we are now living next door, we “get” first picking! It’s always hard work but a lot of fun. And a sip of fresh pressed apple juice is well worth it… ask Sean! This is after his first taste. He figured out where it was all coming from and grabbed the cup once it was free.

Falling leaves!

October 22, 2008

Yesterday at the church the kids saw all the leaves on the ground and wanted to play.  So I grabbed the camera and let them have at it!

… and Happy Birthday today to me!  Another year older, and perhaps wiser too… we hope!

Day 291

October 17, 2008

Jonathan's new glasses
The day has arrived… well the glasses did anyway. We went and picked them up, and he wore them most of the afternoon. He was playing outside with some friends and said they kept falling down. We might need to get a string and tie it to him! They said they might slip a little, but that’s because his face is small… because he’s FIVE! He’s too cute! He picked these out all on his own, and they look great on him. Now we’ll see if they make it through school!
You can’t tell in the picture, but they are blue!  Jonathan wanted me to say that :)

Plum full!

October 11, 2008

We went to Fairview last night after Shane got home from work to pick plums.  It was COLD!!!!  I helped Shane for a bit until the kids were too cold to talk.  Then we headed inside the house where it was a balmy 60ºF. Believe me it was nice!

Got milk?

Box of plums

We got two of these boxes full of plums.  It doesn’t seem like a lot, but it’s plenty! There would have been more if the tree was trimmed.

Watch your step Sean!

Today Shane worked on jam while I was off to Super Saturday.  He got 32 pints processed, and only 1/2 of 1 box done.  I’ll be working on the rest for a few days!

Blind as a bat!

So we a few weeks ago we got a note from the school nurse saying Jonathan needed a complete eye exam.  So I set up an appointment with our optometrist and yesterday was the big day!  Well come to find out, he is far-sighted.  His right eye is 20/50 and his left eye is 20/60.  But the difference in focusing each eye is way off.  So he uses his right eye to focus on things and read.  The doctor said he probably wasn’t even using his left eye to focus.  The technical term is amblyopia, but a lot of people call it “lazy eye” even though that is not the condition… it’s just the result of the condition.

Doctor's note

So he gets to wear glasses… and a patch!  He gets his glasses in about a week, and in three months they will evaluate how the glasses are helping and see how much he has to wear a patch.

Expensive night

October 6, 2008

After 2.5 hours and $100 at the ER last night, Sean has an ear infection.  We only went to the ER because he woke up from his nap with a 104 fever, where he had been just fine 2 hours before.  It hit so fast that I think it scared him.  They gave him motrin and tylenol to break the fever.  He finally calmed down by the time the doctor saw him.  He slept all night and was back to normal today…like nothing happened.  Other than he won’t eat, unless it’s fruit!

Medicine

Well since I’m here I might as well catch you all up!  In the last month we have done about 100 quarts of peaches.  That’s a lot of peaches, but we will probably be doing that every year.  The best part is, they only cost us $14 plus the time to pick them!  What a steal!  Sean loves fruit and it’s about all he eats.  So that takes care of his one year food storage!  We will be going to pick plums in Fairview this week and doing plum jam until I drop!

Jonathan is in school everyday, which is wonderful!  I’ve read so many books it’s embarassing :) He is doing really well in school.  I hear from other parents who go in once a week that he is so smart!   (Sometimes I wonder if they mean he is a smart alec!)  The teacher sent home a list of things that the kids don’t know as well as they should and to work on them.  The only thing marked on his was his address.  And since we’ve only been here 6+ months I don’t think it’s too bad.  We’ve worked on it the last few days and he has it down pretty well!  They also sent home some flash cards: alphabet, numbers 1-30, and words.  He knows his alphabet and counts to 100, and he is supposed to be able to read the words by the end of October.  The first time through he only stumbled on a couple.

Sean is turning into quite the mover and shaker, literally!  He loves to run around following Jonathan.  He has a little hop when he runs that is pretty entertaining.  When he hears music he will start bobbing his head around to the rhythm.  And he loves to sit at the piano and “read” the music books.  He has to have a book or he will throw a fit.  You have to sit with him and turn the pages when he is done “playing” each song.  I usually put Sean down for a nap a little before Jonathan gets on the bus.  Since it is so quiet without Jonathan around, then he will take a two or three hour nap!  And since he gets a good nap in he also sleeps through the night.  He is on a really good schedule right now.

Shane is in school at UVU and working full time.  His company moved up to Draper so that adds a little bit to the day.  On three days a week he goes to school after lunch and then heads back to Draper for a few more hours of work.  Most days he gets home around 6-6:30… he leaves home at about 5:30 every morning.  He is a big help around the house and is starting to do a bit on the yard on the weekends.  We have sooooo many weeds.  It’s hard to control them because of the orchard and irrigation ditch across the road.  They only spray for bugs, not weeds, so there is tons of seeds flying around.  We will water and then he goes out and pulls weeds, or uses a pick ax to break up the clay and rocks to be able to pull up the weeds.  It’s a lot of work!

I am on the enrichment committee in the ward (along with ward librarian and choir pianist; I’m just making up for what Shane can’t do right now!  They called him to do something with cub scouts but it didn’t work with his schedule.  He is the Ward Website coordinator or something; he’s got it easy!).  Anyway, we have our Super Saturday this weekend, which I didn’t do much for, but I will be there to help out.  We are also trying the throw together a Ward Cookbook, which I got put in charge of.  Someone just came to the door with another stack of recipes.  I still have about 60 to enter plus what she just gave me!  And we have to have it done by the 15th in order to get them for Christmas.  I need to get typing!

Well that’s it for now.  We are really boring, but that’s life!
